Jonathan Edgeworth is a Clinical Microbiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation, and Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases at Kings College London. He is the Critical Care Infection Service Lead delivering daily multi-disciplinary bedside rounds across 3 intensive care units, that expanded significantly during the COVID pandemic into a network comprising almost 200 ICU beds. These rounds bring together established colleagues and trainees from the ICU, infection prevention & control, antimicrobial pharmacy, infectious diseases and the microbiology & virology laboratory diagnostic services. Together this provides for a single integrated infection service across a broad agenda including management of sepsis and secondary infections, preventing transmission of resistant organisms and both antimicrobial and antifungal stewardship.
He is also Director of the Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research (CIDR) based on the St Thomas’ Hospital site, which includes scientists, clinicians and research nurses. We work on epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance including MRSA, VRE, and multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria such as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaciae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We are also evaluating novel diagnostics such as nanopore-based metagenomics that were assessed for clinical utility in treating COVID-19 patients.
The talk today will reflect on clinical and research experience including that gained during the COVID-19 pandemic to inform an overview of infection prevention and control in the critical care setting.
